The Government has intensified engagement with the boda boda sector following high-level consultative meetings in Kilifi and Kisumu, as part of efforts to protect livelihoods, strengthen security, and restore order in one of Kenya’s most important informal economic sectors.

Led by the Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration, Raymond Omollo, the engagements focused on strengthening collaboration between government, security agencies, and boda boda leadership while addressing challenges affecting operators across the country.

The renewed push comes as the Government directed the release of 188 motorbikes detained over petty offences, a move aimed at easing the burden on operators and protecting incomes for those who rely on the sector for daily livelihoods.

Supporting more than two million livelihoods directly, the boda boda industry remains a critical pillar of Kenya’s urban and rural economy, providing last-mile transport, youth employment, and daily mobility services in towns and villages nationwide.

During the meetings, the Government reaffirmed that while the sector plays a vital economic role, criminal elements will not be allowed to infiltrate and undermine its operations. Security agencies are working closely with regional associations and grassroots leadership to identify and remove individuals involved in criminal activities.

The coordinated approach is intended to restore order, enhance public confidence, and safeguard the integrity of a sector that millions of Kenyans depend on every day. The Government reiterated its commitment to balancing enforcement with economic empowerment, ensuring the boda boda sector remains safe, productive, and beneficial to communities across the country.
