This morning, the terrorist group Al Shabaab attacked an African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) base camp at El Adde, in Somalia. El Adde is occupied by Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) serving under AMISOM.
Our gallant soldiers reacted swiftly to protect their camp; to protect their peace and stability that they are in Somalia to secure; and to protect our country from its enemies and their sympathisers.
Yesterday, our gallant soldiers were attacked in a military base in Somalia by what is suspected to be alshabaab insurgents.
At this moment of sorrow to the nation and to the bereaved families, we send our heartfelt condolences at the same time, I urge Kenyans to stand in unity and remember that our resolve in this war on terror is unshakable.

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE CDF GENERAL SAMSON MWATHATHE ON 17TH JANUARY 17, 2016
Ladies and gentlemen, just as the CS has pointed out in her statement, I also wish to highlight a few operational aspects.
First, I know there has been anxiety for information following the attack , KDF priority as is our norm with military operations , was to degrade the enemy which we have already done through a consulate effort of both land ,air assets in the last 48 hours.
Every Kenyan stands with the families of the Kenya Defence Forces soldiers who laid down their lives and paid the ultimate sacrifice in the face of terror at El Adde in Somalia. These enemies of humanity struck at brave patriots, who are in Somalia to protect our families, our nation, and the world.
Our fallen Heroes are returning home. The injured are in the care of our medical staff. As their Commander-in-Chief, and as a parent, my heart goes out to them, and to their grieving families. Let us come together in prayer for all of them.
